Croydon Council Waste, Bins & Recycling

If you've got bulky rubbish in Croydon, you've got three options: take it to a recycling centre yourself, book a council collection, or call someone in to do it. Here's the honest version of how each one works.

Taking it yourself: the recycling centres

Croydon has three household reuse and recycling centres: Factory Lane in West Croydon (accessed from the south via Roman Way, the A236), Fishers Farm in New Addington, and Purley Oaks on Brighton Road (join the queue from the north, as there's no access from the Purley side). Fishers Farm also has a Community Reuse Shop, where usable items are fixed up and resold rather than scrapped.

If you've got a car and the muscle to load and unload, they'll take most household and garden waste for free. The catch is the obvious one: you need transport that fits it, you do all the lifting at both ends, and opening times and queues can eat your afternoon. Vans are far more restricted than people expect, and trailers aren't allowed at all. Booking a council bulky collection

The council will collect bulky items from the kerbside for a fee. It's a genuinely useful service, but it comes with a few strings worth knowing before you rely on it:

• You book and pay in advance, then wait for an allocated collection date, not a same-day slot.
• It's capped at six items per booking, and they only take exactly what you've booked and paid for. Extra bits left alongside won't be taken.
• Everything has to be at the kerb, out the front of your home, the night before, because crews start as early as 5am.
• You have to get it there. If it's a heavy sofa on the second floor, that's on you and someone to help.

For a few small things you can carry out yourself and you're happy to wait, that's often the cheapest way to do it, and we'll say so plainly.
